"Fallen Leaves Returning to their Roots: Bone Repatriation Service of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals and Preservation of its Cultural Heritage" Exhibition and Special Programme
From the late 19th century to the mid-20th century, the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals of Hong Kong had offered bone repatriation service to Chinese people all over the world, aiding hundreds of thousands in fulfilling their final wishes of returning to their ancestral homeland after death. For more than a century, Tung Wah, served as a crucial transit hub, had established extensive connections with Chinese organisations in Mainland China and abroad as well as created a global charitable network that had spanned over two centuries. The network imposed huge impacts on the history of modern China and Hong Kong. And the research on the history of Tung Wah's bone repatriation services and preservation of its cultural heritage are of great value.
Today, Tung Wah preserves the valuable artefacts and historical records of the bone repatriation service and the Tung Wah Coffin Home, a declared monument built 120 years ago, is still serving the deceased.
