Hand-in-Hand for Benevolence: 150 Years of History of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals of Hong Kong 1870–2020 Book Launch Ceremony

On 17 March 2026, Tung Wah Group of Hospitals hosted the book launch ceremony for the English edition of Hand-in-Hand for Benevolence: 150 Years of History of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals of Hong Kong 1870–2020 at the Assembly Hall of Tung Wah Hospital. The event was officiated by Mr. Tseng Hing Yip, York, Vice-Chairman of TWGHs, with the Hon. Professor Lau Chi-pang, BBS, JP, Legislative Council Member, Special Advisor to the President on Publicity, Director of the Communications and Public Affairs Office, and Professor of History at Lingnan University, who spearheaded the English edition project, also in attendance.
Vice-Chairman Tsang Hing‑yip mentioned in his welcoming speech that since the publication of the Chinese edition in 2021, the book has received wide recognition for its academic and cultural value. He commended Professor Lau for his meticulous and insightful narration of Tung Wah’s century-long history, which vividly illustrates the organisation’s deep-rooted contributions ties with Hong Kong through its work in healthcare, education, social services, and disaster relief efforts, etc.
As Tung Wah Group of Hospitals celebrates its 155th anniversary this year, the release of the English edition is especially timely. It will enable non-Chinese-speaking readers and overseas Chinese communities to gain a deeper understanding of the intertwined histories of Hong Kong and Tung Wah, making the publication particularly meaningful.
He extended his gratitude to the Hon. Professor Lau and his team for their translation and editorial work, extended heartfelt thanks to City University of Hong Kong Press for once again taking up the publication of the English edition following the successful release of the Chinese version.
The new book Hand-in-Hand for Benevolence: 150 Years of History of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals of Hong Kong 1870–2020, compiled and translated by the Hon. Professor Lau Chi-pang, is published by City University of Hong Kong Press. Spanning the years 1870 to 2020, the book documents TWGHs’ development across healthcare, education, social services, fundraising, and heritage preservation, serving as a vital reference for the study of Hong Kong’s philanthropic history.
